golden stag awards

last night i was fortunate enough to have already procured my ticket to the sold out golden stag homebrewing awards event at london pub
and snag a last minute cancellation one for my buddy

people, i can't remember when i have felt that much love in a room!
it was a fantastic event!

for the complete list of winners in the 23 categories
(323 entries were submitted)
please head on over to the vanbrewers' website

the vanbrewers cleaned up at the event
which was judged by blind tasting of course
and most of them were at the london pub to accept their medals
my photos are still on my camera at this point in time, natch
but i do have several shots of the locals with necks bowing under the weight of so many medals that i will post eventually - how's sunday afternoon for you?
or maybe monday or tuesday, let's be realistic here!

featured for the brewers and their adoring fans alike
were 11 collaboration beers for us to sample
a few were brewed solely by russell's brewers and apprentices
but the rest were brewed by homebrewers in collaboration with russell brewing
i managed to get myself through 10 of the 11 beers
and while a couple of the brewers were less than impressed with how their beers turned out
the rest of us thought they were a mighty drinkable offering
notably graham and scott's not so smoked porter
and matt's version of dan's recipe for a crazily tart roggen weizen

wackiest brew?  the pilsner, gin, dubonnet combination that was served in a glass of ice
it tasted like the milk at the end of a bowl of fruit loops!

the competition boasted the largest prize ever awarded in a north american home brew contest
best in show won $3,000 worth of brewing, bottling and distribution by russell brewery

graham and katy of vanbrewers did a great job putting on the event
in collaboration with the vcbw organizers, including chris who was on hand to announce the winners

people did not want to leave at 10:00 when the casks were cut off!
but most of us came to our senses and remembered we do have day jobs to get to
i made it home and into my bed by 11:00 again!
(and i had a wee nap before i went to london pub... its a long week people!!)
and dreamed happy dreams full of smiling homebrewers and glasses full of delicious beer!

over the course of the night i didn't hear a single bad word said by anyone
homebrewers were telling me as many tales of other homebrewers' magical brewing feats as they were fun anecdotes about their own
people were going up to medal winners and congratulating them soundly
everyone was generously extolling each others' virtues
it was a beer geek lovefest!
no wonder i had such great dreams last night!
