cask night

tonight's cask at the railway club is a dry-hopped pale ale from russell brewing

21st amendment brewery

how many posts can i get out of my visit to 21st amendment brewery in san francisco?
well, i took lots of photos and five pages of notes!

located at 563 2nd street, it is very close to giants stadium
meaning that they get a huge crowd before and after games
and they have a special license on game days to open a beer garden in the street next door

because i went on a game day i didn't get to have a tour of the brewery itself
but since they have a glass wall between the brewery and the pub, i got to see the brewery

the interior is all wooden beams and exposed duct work and cinder block walls
there is a bar, a lower seating area and a loft bar over the kitchen
and like i said, on game days there is a beer garden outside

during the giants game the beer garden looked like this:

san francisco

just randomly walking down 2nd street on my way between the bart from the airport and 21st amendment brewery
as in very shortly after arriving in san francisco on a thursday afternoon
i passed an indian restaurant whose curtain protecting their beer stock had fallen
i was stopped in my tracks checking out the beers they had on offer
and i was impressed:
delerium tremens
shipyard ipa
flying horse

please excuse the intense glare in the photo,
it was the best i could do in the circumstances!
go figure!
i felt like this was a very good sign of the beer delights in store for me for the rest of my beer vacation in san francisco!

i'm ba-ack!

back from my san francisco mini vacation
not too sure what the overarching theme was though
i went down for pride
but at least half of my photos are beer related...

and i just gotta say the weather was very welcoming there
not like the suckage i have returned to in vancouver...

brewdog names the top 5 contentious craft beer issues (at least in scotland) as:

can vs. bottle
keg vs. cask
high abv beers
duty on beer
multinational buy-outs

i'd say at least four of the five are relevant for north america as well
(the duty issue or setting a minimum price for alcohol isn't currently being addressed by parliament in canadia as far as i know... and i'm too lazy to find out for sure)

do i want to try it?  of course!
and frankly i hadn't heard of flying monkeys brewery until this
so if its a publicity stunt, it worked on me!

You can get a pretty good view of the brewery from a special window we have, but we do not open it up to the public when the Giants are in town. Just to warn you, Thursday is actually an early game day so it will be slammed that day.

Rogue Farms Micro Barley Farm,
Tygh Valley, Oregon:
RiskTM 2-row winter malting barley is fully grown and filling out the kernels. Color recently changed from green to rusty brown. Rains delayed the planting of the DareTM 2-row spring malting barley. But recent sunny weather is helping them grow, they're now almost a foot tall. Total acres planted down slightly from last year.

Micro Floor Malt House: We lost a 2,000 pound batch of 2-row floor malt when the kiln malfunctioned during the first weekend of June and had to dump it. This has delayed the release of our Floor Malt Whiskey. For the rest of the month, we will floor malt another ten, 2,000 pound batches. We're also malting several batches of 6-row barley for Oregon State University.

As of June 1, the hop bines are four feet high and growing almost a foot per day. By the end of the month they'll have climbed to the top of the trellises and started spreading out across the wires. Look for flowers to follow, turning to cones by late July.

Pumpkins: An acre sized pumpkin patch was planted late May. Small shoots have emerged. Growing two varieties, a sweet baking pumpkin and a jack-o-lantern variety.

Berries: Looking healthy despite the rain. Raspberries should be ready to harvest by the end of the month, Marionberries in July.

Free Range Chickens: We're raising eight varieties of chickens this year; Golden Laced Wyandots, Ostralorps, Dark Brahmas, Blue Andalusians, Splash Andalusians, Barred Rock, Buff Orpingtons, Delawares. Chicks born early May are now about a month old, losing their fluff and growing feathers. At about one-quarter of their adult size, they'll be mature enough to lay eggs starting September.

Herbs: In June, we're planting an herbal garden to grow Woodruff, Chamomile, Lavender ingredients for our beers and spirits.

Hazelnuts: We get our hazelnuts from a neighbor's orchard just down Wigrich Road.

A new farm product this year is a series of cheddar cheeses made with the hops grown on our Micro Hopyard. Crafted in collaboration with artisan cheese maker Rogue Creamery of Central Point, Oregon. Hop leaves are de-stemmed, chopped fine, steeped and mixed into the curds. A Rogue Farms Freedom hops cheddar and Freedom hops TouVelle were released in June.

Newport, Oregon

Dungeness Crab: Newport crabbers are reporting a successful season. Since the opener on December 1, more than 7.4 million pounds of Dungeness crab were landed at Newport. That's 500,000 pounds more than for all of last year's season. Crabbing harvest peaks in December - February and we're now entering a summer season of limited catches that ends August 15.

Bay Shrimp: Newport's Bay Shrimp fishery is off to a very strong start. More than 3.39 million pounds of shrimp were landed in Newport since the season began in April. That's almost twice as much shrimp brought in during the same two month period last year.

Chinook Salmon
Commercial: 31,384 pounds landed in Newport as of June 1. Harvest off Central Oregon began in April and continues until July 9. Resumes July 17 - August 31, and then October 1 - 31.
Sport: Ocean fishing continues through September 30. Fall fishing on Yaquina River (mouth to Big Elk Creek) runs August 1 - December 31.

Coho Salmon
Commercial: Season begns July and runs through early September.
Sport: Summer ocean fishing runs July 2 - August 13. Fall season is Thursday through Saturday, September 1 - 10. Fall fishing on Yaquina River (mouth to Big Elk Creek) runs September 15 to November 30.

Commercial: Two day season, June 29 and July 13.
Sport: All depths season off Newport runs June 9 - 11 with back up dates of June 23 - 25. Nearshore season continues through October 31, or until quota is met. Sport fishermen have landed 20,476 pounds of halibut in Newport for 2011.

Albacore Tuna
Season opens June and runs through October.

hop in the dark

my friend scout is a very good friend indeed
she was in portland recently
and when i asked if she could make it a mission to find some deschutes hop in the dark for me, she did!
she brought back a bottle for us to share after softball
and another for me to enjoy at my leisure

the bottle we shared on friday night was every bit as good as i remember last year's being
and such a great treat!

i'm hoarding the other bottle for a bit
savouring the knowledge that it is there waiting for me

i love having friends who understand the importance of beer
and being willing to go out of their way to make sure i get me some otherwise unavailable bottles!

we showed up nice and early and ate our way through half of the exhibitors
and then hit the beer garden!

first you pour the shot over a sugar cube

then you flame the sugar cube

then you dissolve the sugar cube with 2 parts water
then you muddle it all and drink it
(you may note this was more than 2 parts water... disappointing for $3 a shot)

leo of vancouver beer blog having too many tickets to use and sharing them liberally with me!

last week's cask at the yaletown was the downtown brown ale
dry-hopped with uk goldings!

last week also saw us get to taste imported beers
ryan brought back two from his trip to winnipeg

one, from half pints, tasted exactly like apple crumble!
he also traded a growler of yaletown with the half pints guys for a bottle out of their cellar collection
the 3 musketeers grand cuvee doppelbock
holy divinely fabulously delicious batman!

no one got the chocolate from this one at first
but after we visited a couple of other beers and revisited it
everyone got the chocolate notes

iain then raided his cellar and produced a couple of belgians for us

i translate this one as ringing bell
i do not speak flemish or any related language, so i'm totally making it up!
and i'm having too much fun with my invented translation to look up what it actually means

not all of us are belgian fans
(yay, so nice to have company on that one!)
but we all agreed that these two were darned drinkable
happy times!

and i'll be making the trek there again for more cask goodness tonight - yay!!!!!!!!
