On November 19th head over to the Yaletown Brewpub.  They’re hosting an all IPA caskival.  Just show up at 11:30 and get your $20 passport to try all 11 casks.

This Saturday (November 12), Burnaby is hosting the second annual BurnabyBeer Fest at SpaceKraft on Kingsway.  There will be 30 beers and tasty appetizers to sample while you’re entertained by live music.  And there are three sessions to choose from.  Tickets are available on EventBrite.

Luppolo Brewing has opened its doors!  With a soft opening on October 28th they swelled the ranks of ‘Yeast Van’ breweries.  Their tasting room is beautiful, and they opened with a strong line up of 7 beers on tap.  Go visit them at 1123 Venables.  I’d also like to congratulate Luppolo for winning the judge’s choice at Celebrate Craft... Beer last weekend, for their fresh hopped Belgian rye IPA.

Tomorrow (November 9) at Faculty Brewing you can enjoy a pastrami on rye with your beer.  Starting at 6:00 Mensch deli will be serving up their famous sandwiches.

Want to learn more about how to talk about beer?  There’s a kickstarter campaign that has 9 days left to go, which, if it gets funded, will help you out!  Local beer evangelist and fountain of knowledge, Dave Shea has created a deck of playing cards for the beer beginner and beer expert alike.  The cards can be used while tasting beer to help you find the words you’re looking for to describe the flavours and aromas and other aspects of beer.   If you’re interested, you can find the Palate Deck on twitter and Kickstarter. 

While you’re feeling philanthropic, you might also want to check out the Kickstarter campaign for a women-owned and operated craft brewery in Rwanda.  With the help of Beau’s Brewing from Ontario they’re raising funds to purchase a bottling line.  And there’s a local connection to the far away brewery - brewery system manufacturers Newland Systems Inc. of Abbotsford has donated the brewhouse they’ll be using to brew the beers.

And finally, have your say on the state of craft beer in BC on the BeerMeBC annual survey.  You can fill it in on the website and that will make you eligible to win a prize!  You’ve got until November 30thto be counted.

This is not news to anyone. But have you ruminated on just how large the gender gap is?  A 2018 survey by Nielsen-Harris  found American craft beer drinkers are 68.5 per cent male and 31.5 per cent female. Closer to home,  BeerMeBC’s 2018 survey  had those numbers at 71 and 29 per cent, with 0.32 per cent identifying as “other.” For those not so strong in the math department, that means that there are only three women drinking craft beer for every seven men. If you were a straight man looking for a date, you wouldn’t like those odds at all. And I can tell you, as one of those three women, it’s not much fun being outnumbered everywhere I go to enjoy my beloved craft beer, delightful as those seven men may be. The grandfather of Canadian brewing passed away yesterday. What's Brewing captured a final salute from John Mitchell to the BC craft beer community. Cheers to you, John, for all you've done for the beverage and community we all love.
