Doing Good by Dining Out

Dining Out For Life 2017 returns on Thursday, March 30
Vancouver, BC (February 22, 2017) — The 23rd annual Dining Out For Life fundraiser is taking place on Thursday, March 30, 2017.

On that day, Dining Out For Life participating restaurants from Whistler to White Rock and across the Lower Mainland will donate 25% of their food sales in support of local men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.

By patronizing a partner restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner on Thursday, March 30, 2017, you’ll be supporting HIV/AIDS care right here at home.

Over the past 23 years, Dining Out For Life has raised over $3 million, with proceeds directly benefiting the programs and services provided free-of-charge by registered not-for-profit A Loving Spoonful. These include:
  • An average of 100,000 meals per year delivered to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Metro Vancouver, with more than 70% of the families on the service headed by a single mother
  • Wellness Program nutritional counselling and meal planning
  • People helped through the charities’ programs are often affected by multiple and co-existing illnesses such as cancer, hepatitis C, heart disease and mental illness

HIV/AIDS IN THE LOWER MAINLAND: In 2011, the Public Health Agency of Canada estimated 71,300 people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada — with over 25% residing in British Columbia. Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside maintains the highest HIV prevalence in the Western world, reaching as high 27%. While new infection rates in B.C. have thankfully decreased, advanced therapies mean people with HIV/AIDS are living longer and the number of people who depend A Loving Spoonful's services continues to grow.

ABOUT A LOVING SPOONFUL: A Loving Spoonful provides free, healthy, nutritious meals and nutritional counseling to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS in Metro Vancouver. They collaborate closely with doctors, dieticians, nurses, case managers and community partners for referrals and client care. They are especially proud of their new partnership with Mava Foods located in Richmond, BC. The ability to acquire our meals from a local supplier has been incredibly beneficial. Their dedicated volunteers use their own cars, gas and time to ensure those in the community are fed. But, with approximately 20% government funding, the rest of the outreach budget must be raised through fundraising events like Dining Out for Life.

New Seasonal Releases from Central City Brewers & Distillers

New Central City Seasonal Releases, Hopping Mad Mosaic Cider and Red Racer Lemon Groove, now available

Surrey, British Columbia. Central City Brewers & Distillers is expanding its exploration of hop flavours with two new seasonal release products. Known best for their Red Racer IPA, hop forward beers have been a staple of Central City Brewers’ product mix.  Showcasing their love for hops is the new Red Racer Lemon Groove Golden Ale and Hopping Mad Mosaic Hopped Cider.

The Lemon Groove is a seasonal release under the Red Racer brand. This beer is single hopped using the Lemon Drop hop variety. Giving notes of citrus and lemon, this Golden Ale is a balance of hop aromatics and moderate bitter notes. Together, a lemon-peel like character, along with a mid-body, provide a smooth and aromatic experience.

From Central City’s Hopping Mad Cider brand, comes their first seasonal cider release. Building on the hopped, core product, this cider is dry-hopped, using the tropical flavoured, mosaic hop. Giving notes of mango and citrus, this aromatic craft cider is lightly sweet and unique among hopped ciders. Craft cider and craft beer drinkers alike will find something to love about this limited release product.

“We have been known for our hoppy beers and we wanted to show the more subtle character of what hops can do to craft beer and cider. The Lemon Drop is a new hop, and we were very excited to experiment with its citrus character.

We also use the Mosaic Hop in our Red Racer India Session Ale and Super Stellar IPA. We chose to use it in a cider to give the flavour that we love in an innovative cider product.”

The Red Racer Lemon Groove and Hopping Mad Mosaic Hop will be available at select craft retailers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

There’s Excitement Brewing on Vancouver’s East Side 
Brewers and Distillers of Vancouver’s East Village To Launch Passport Reward Program

Vancouver B.C., February 21, 2017 — There’s excitement brewing on Vancouver's east side. On Friday, February 24, 2017, six artisanal breweries and one small-batch distillery, all located in Vancouver's most concentrated craft beer and spirits district, are hoisting their glasses to toast the launch of their self-guided tasting tour and passport reward program: The East Village Brewery & Distillery Passport. Enthusiasts can pick up a passport and map at any of the participating breweries and distilleries located within an easy beer-hopping distance of each other, and start exploring. Tasting a variety of award-wining micro-brews and craft-spirits is the priority on this tour but there are also many popular East Van eateries to discover. Participants are encouraged to approach the tour at their own pace, either checking-in at all seven stops in one day or adopting a more leisurely attitude visiting each destination over time. Once all seven stamps are collected, they will be awarded with an East Village branded growler to add to their collection.

Taking part in The East Village Brewery & Distillery Passport will be the area’s oldest brewery (established in 1995) Storm Brewing, as well as Parallel 49 Brewing, Powell Street Craft Brewery, Doan’s Craft Brewing Co., Callister Brewing Co., Bomber Brewing and Odd Society Spirits.

The East Village Passport was created in partnership with The Hastings North Business Improvement Association to promote the area as a destination for craft beer and spirit lovers. The East Village is located within two historic neighbourhoods situated in the heart of East Vancouver: Hastings Sunrise and Grandview-Woodland. The East Village Light Industrial Area, once known as Cedar Cove, has a longstanding manufacturing history dating back to the 1800s. At the time, the area’s first and only brewery, Columbia Brewery, was located near the intersection of present-day Powell Street and Wall Street. The district was also home to several mills, a slaughterhouse and other resource facilities. Today this community is still a thriving manufacturing zone and is rapidly becoming a hub for craft breweries and distilleries.

VANCOUVER, BC, February 22, 2017— Famoso Inc. is celebrating 10 years and 30 restaurant locations with a new brand identity and mission to create social gathering spaces. All franchises moving forward will be known as Famoso Pizzeria + Bar, the culmination of the brand’s evolution since launching as Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria in 2007.

The new brand extends to the four walls of new Famoso franchises, where guests can expect to find a social gathering space that stays true to the vibrant atmosphere commonly found in real Italian pizzerias. DOUBLE SECRET PROBATION DOPPELSTICKE ALTBIER: When head brewers Blair Calibaba (Bomber) and Kevin Winter (Whistler's Coast Mountain) first met, they immediately became fast friends and began plans for a collaboration brew. The result of that planning is this special version
of a Düsseldorf Altbier that is higher in alcohol than the traditional German style with a much hoppier aroma due to the use of dry-hopping.

'Doppelsticke' means 'double secret' in German, hence the nod to the Delta House brothers and Dean Wormer's infamous crackdown. In the words of John 'Bluto' Blutarsky, "My advice to you is to start drinking heavily."

Today, Bridge Brewing takes their brewery to the next level by opening their kitchen and introducing Chef Krissy Seymour. The all-day menu will offer a selection of tacos based upon seasonal and local ingredients. All sauces and salsas are made in house with meat being purchased locally in North Vancouver from Two Rivers Specialty Meats.

“We are thrilled to expand beyond beer – with our new lounge licence, customers can stick around and enjoy a bite to eat along with their pint of beer,” says Bridge Brewing co-founder, Jason Stratton.

The menu includes:
·         Jerk pulled pork with pineapple salsa, avocado crema and pickled red cabbage
·         Lime and coconut braised chicken with sprouts, crushed peanuts and sweet chilli
·         Buffalo paneer with yam and black beans, chipotle, and cilantro yogurt

What’s up next? Bridge has received its lounge license and is looking forward to expanding hours of operation and building a patio with outside seating for the summer.
